Korean Consonants: Your Next Step in Hangul

In Lesson 1 you learned how Hangul works and read your first Korean vowels. You also saw how Korean letters join together.
ㄱ + ㅏ = 가
Today you will learn the eight most important Korean consonants. These are the letters that appear in almost every Korean word you will ever read. By the end of this lesson you will be able to read dozens of Korean syllables on your own, without Romanization.
1. What Are Korean Consonants?
Hangul is built from consonants and vowels. For example:
ㄴ + ㅏ = 나
ㄴ is a consonant. ㅏ is a vowel. Together they make:
나 — na
Think of Hangul like building with blocks.
Consonant + Vowel = One Korean Syllable
2. The 8 Basic Korean Consonants 🔤
Here are the eight consonants we will learn today.

| ㄴ | n | like n |
| ㄷ | d / t | between d and t |
| ㄹ | r / l | between r and l |

| ㅇ | silent / ng | special consonant |
Don’t worry about making every sound perfect today. The goal is simple:
See it → Hear it → Say it → Read it
3. ㄱ — the g / k Sound
ㄱ
ㄱ can sound like g or k, depending on where it appears in a word. For now, remember it as g/k.
ㄱ + ㅏ = 가
Try these:
가 — ga · 고 — go · 구 — gu · 기 — gi
Now read them without looking at the Romanization:
가 고 구 기
Say them aloud. Great start!
4. ㄴ — the n Sound
ㄴ
This one is easy. ㄴ sounds very close to the English n.
ㄴ + ㅏ = 나
Try these:
나 — na · 노 — no · 누 — nu · 니 — ni
Now read them without looking at the Romanization:
나 노 누 니
Almost identical to English.
5. ㄷ — the d / t Sound
ㄷ
ㄷ sits somewhere between d and t.
ㄷ + ㅏ = 다
Try these:
다 — da · 도 — do · 두 — du · 디 — di
Now read them without looking at the Romanization:
다 도 두 디
You’re doing great.
6. ㄹ — the r / l Sound
ㄹ
There is no perfect English equivalent for ㄹ. Depending on its position it can sound like r or l. Don’t try to master it today. Listen and imitate.
ㄹ + ㅏ = 라
Try these:
라 — ra · 로 — ro · 루 — ru · 리 — ri
Now read them without looking at the Romanization:
라 로 루 리
You will hear ㄹ constantly in Korean, so it comes with practice.
7. ㅁ — the m Sound
ㅁ
ㅁ sounds like m.
ㅁ + ㅏ = 마
Try these:
마 — ma · 모 — mo · 무 — mu · 미 — mi
Now read them without looking at the Romanization:
마 모 무 미
Easy, right?
8. ㅂ — the b / p Sound
ㅂ
ㅂ sits somewhere between b and p.
ㅂ + ㅏ = 바
Try these:
바 — ba · 보 — bo · 부 — bu · 비 — bi
Now read them without looking at the Romanization:
바 보 부 비
Four more syllables you can now read.
9. ㅅ — the s Sound (and a Surprise)
ㅅ
ㅅ usually sounds like s.
ㅅ + ㅏ = 사
사 — sa · 소 — so · 수 — su · 시 — si
But here is something interesting. 시 is usually pronounced closer to “shi” than “si.”
시 ≈ shi
You will learn more pronunciation rules later. For now, just remember that 시 sounds like “shi.”
10. ㅇ — the Special Korean Consonant
ㅇ
This letter is special. At the beginning of a syllable, ㅇ is silent. It makes no sound at all.
ㅇ + ㅏ = 아 · ㅇ + ㅗ = 오 · ㅇ + ㅜ = 우 · ㅇ + ㅣ = 이
So ㅇ is what lets a Korean syllable begin with a vowel sound. Read these:
아 오 우 이
Later you will learn that ㅇ makes an “ng” sound when it appears at the end of a syllable. You don’t need that today.
11. Let’s Read Hangul! 📖
Now the fun part. Don’t look at the Romanization first. Try reading the Korean letters yourself.
가 나 다 라 마
Did you get it? ga — na — da — ra — ma
바 사 아
ba — sa — a
Now let’s change the vowel.
고 노 도 로 모 보 소 오
구 누 두 루 무 부 수 우
기 니 디 리 미 비 시 이
Look at that. You are already reading dozens of Korean syllables.

13. Real Korean Words You Can Already Read 🇰🇷
Let’s try a few simple Korean words.
나 — na
Meaning: I / me. This is an informal way to say “I.”
너 — neo
Meaning: you. This is informal, so be careful using it with people you don’t know well.
오이 — oi
Meaning: 🥒 cucumber. Look carefully — 오 + 이 = 오이. You can already read it.
아이 — ai
Meaning: 👧 child / kid. 아 + 이 = 아이.
14. Why Hangul Gets Easier Every Lesson
At first, Korean may look like this:
안녕하세요
And you might think, “How am I ever going to read that?”
But Hangul is not a collection of complicated symbols. It is a system. You learn the consonants. You learn the vowels. Then you combine them.
ㄱ + ㅏ = 가 · ㄴ + ㅏ = 나 · ㅁ + ㅣ = 미 · ㅅ + ㅗ = 소
That is why learning Hangul gets much easier once you understand the pattern.

Reading aloud is one of the fastest ways to get comfortable with Hangul.
